After spending the last few weeks at my cottage without internet or UK cell phone connection, it was definitely hard to get used to being online all the time again. On the other hand, spending too much time away can leave you feeling “out of the loop”. The answer in my opinion…finding balance between the two. How can we strike a balance between our mellow, relaxation time and our upbeat, busy lifestyles?
Stress hormones can wreak havoc on the body and mind so it’s important to bring tips from our vacation time to our daily lives. What do you love so much about your vacations? Personally, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, waking up without any routine ahead, diving into a good book, having a break from technology, and being in the middle of nature.
Rather than spend your lunch break in front of your computer or on your smart phone, take a walk outside. Make it a conscious walk…notice your breaths, your footsteps, the sounds and smells around you. The more we connect to our world around us (and not “stay connected” in the online meaning), we feel more grounded. The fresh air will rejuvenate us, clear our head and leave us feeling fresh when we return to work.
On your next day off, try not to plan anything. Leave it completely open. Don’t count on the weather being a certain way and just accept everything as it comes. This is a lesson on
expectations. We set expectations and grow upset when they don’t turn out the way we want. The weather will do whatever it wants and this is also a lesson in letting go of your need to control everything. If it’s sunny, do something outside. Visit a local park or outdoor area. Enjoy some time at an outdoor patio. If it rains, take a book or magazine and find a cosy café. Visit a local gallery or favourite store.
Lastly, make an effort to make contact with friends and family on a regular basis. If you live far away, pick up the phone or make a video call. Alternatively, send someone real mail. When is the last time you received a letter or card in the mail? As convenient as email is, it isn’t as personal and doesn’t come close to putting the same smile on a loved one’s face when they find your letter in between their pile of bills.
We all love vacations so why don’t we try to bring some of our “vacation” into our daily lives? Try it today!
