Nature provides us with an abundance of colourful food.  Cooking with colourful food increases your nutrient levels because these foods are so rich in vitamins and minerals.  This is a common sense trick to remember for healthy eating.

The majority of us are not getting enough colour in our diet.  Chips, white bread, cookies, crackers, white rice – they are all bland in colour and  bland in nutrients.  Watch out though because there are many colourful foods on the market.  Some are a little too colourful though.  They are made in a lab and should only be digested in a lab.  Fruit Loops, Skittles, Bubblegum, Gummi Bears, yikes!

So, how do we add some colour into our diet?  With a rainbow of colourful fruits and vegetables. The next question is why do we want to do this.  Just like the rainbow, there are foods that are grouped into colours.  Colours are paired with similar benefits and healing properties.  Today we’ll focus on the red food group.

This salad was really easy to make.  Just buy add radishes, dried cranberries, radicchios, avocados, mixed greens and cucumbers.  The salad dressing is a simple one because there are already so many flavours in the salad already.  Mix up two parts extra virgin olive oil with one part white wine vinegar.  Add some chopped fresh basil and a drop of raw honey for sweetness.

It’s important to eat these foods in their purest form.  Even though ketchup is originally made from tomatoes, it contains a lot of preservatives and sugar which lowers the nutrient content.  In their whole form, these foods are also high in fibre which promotes an efficient digestive system and controls blood sugar levels.

Add some colour into your next meal.  Your body will thank you for it!
