“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.    Hippocrates

Even thousands of years ago, our ancestors used food to heal their ailments.  As conventional medicine progressed, we started to rely on these “potions” to fix us.  Currently, most people have a full pharmacy in their medicine cabinets.  We’re so quick to take a pill whenever we feel any aches or pains, or if we’re feeling under the weather.  But…this doesn’t address the root cause.  What made us feel like this in the first place?!?

In the dictionary, food is defined as “any substance that enables one to live and grow – anything that nourishes.”  The problem with the standard Western diet is that most of the food is processed, sugary and denatured.  In order to use food in our favour, we must enjoy it fresh and enzyme-rich.  Not from a can, a box or a jug.  Food in its most simple form contains vitamins, minerals and nutrients the body needs to sustain.  When we’re focused on healing an ailment or disease, we must increase these foods even more.

I’ve always loved this topic but in the past week, I’ve been looking at many different cases where people have used food as a natural form of healing.  Meghan Telpner from Toronto, suffered with Crohn’s disease and was told that it’s incurable.  After switching to a holsitic diet, she is now celebrating four years without any symptoms.  Kris Carr, author of Crazy Sexy Cancer, was told she has a rare form of cancer almost ten years ago.  She threw her old eating habits out the window and replaced them with a plant based diet.  She is now thriving and has more energy than before.  Dr. Terry Wahls had severe MS (multiple sclerosis) five years ago and was in a wheelchair.  She began to study the standard American diet and found that 90% of Americans eat foods that fail to provide enough building blocks for the brain.  She began eating an incredibly high amount of greens which contain vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are critical for manufacturing myelin and neurotransmitters.  She is now walking on her own and presents her knowledge around the world.  One of my good friends, Jay Seabrook, was diagnosed with a form of Melanoma that takes 60% of its victims’ lives within five years.  He avoided the conventional route and this was almost ten years ago.  He went on an organic, raw food diet for almost a year.  All the signs of cancer disappeared and he is perfectly healthy now.

As a reminder, anything grown in nature is generally healthy.  Anything made in a lab takes a lab to digest.  Fill your plate with fresh foods in their purest form.  You’re making it so easy for your body this way.  Think of your food as your body’s fuel and provide it with nutrients to make it run optimally.
